Takeda Nobushige was Shingen's loyal younger brother, and for a time, his second in command. In the fourth battle of Kawanakajima, Nobushige took the rear guard while Shingen sent a detachment to flank the Uesugi at their camp. Uesugi realized what was happening and launched an assault on Shingen's main army. Takeda's army, split by the detachment, faced overwhelming odds. As Uesugi's force advanced toward Shingen's headquarters, Nobushige charged his troops into the enemy ranks and began shouting his own name to attract the attention of the enemy. While the enemy surrounded Nobushige's division, Takeda's detachment rejoined the battle. The Uesugi were forced to retreat, but Nobushige had paid with his life.
