ften the entire army must take a formation in order to execute a particular battle strategy. Army level formations work just like division formations, except on a larger scale. When an army formation is selected, each division will take aformation, and then the divisions will combine to create the larger pattern.

As with division formations, each army formation has its own unique strengths and weaknesses when used in different situations.

ROMAN: Standard line flaking formation
A standard formation in the Roman army, this pattern always keeps cavalry in reserve as shown in Rsv1 and Rsv2. Their main mission is to drive off enemy cavalry and then flank the enemy if possible.

The main attack force relies on the right flank from the R1 – R3 divisions. It’s better to use legionaries here, because of their attacking power. Roman armies are slow but reliable, and the legionaries will lead the main attack as the battle develops.

As they penetrate the enemy’s defensive lines, the main force will curl in to the enemy’s centre or HQ. They will be supported by the centre divisions from L1, L2, C1, C2, and C3. These divisions can be Auxiliary units (who have a high defensive value as well as a low cost), except for C3, whose main job is to hold the line in case the Auxiliaries fall back too quickly. The L3 division on the left flank is designed to distract the enemy’s main attack by drawing them away from the centre, or leading them into the centre, depending on the situation. The division should avoid actually engaging with the enemy, or it will be overrun very quickly. If the left flank is engaged and under heavy attack, the centre should quickly re-form, bending to form a new defense line before it’s too late. Sending the right flank’s divisions to rescue L3 (left flank) will disorganize the army and take time, and allow the enemy to take control.
