Early in their history, the n people learned to despise kings, foreign rule, and barbarian incursions. The Romans established a republic—the SPQR, or Senatus Populus Que Romanus (the Senate and People of Rome). The republic was a representative government based on law and duty instead of the power of a single individual. They also developed their military and conquered any neighbour who threatened Rome. Never again would Rome be a slave to foreign rule. The Romans expanded to eventually become one of the mightiest empires in history—only to fall when the republic gave way to imperialism, and internal corruption and weakness invited conquest by barbarian tribes.

Scipio Africanus
Publius Cornelius Scipio Africanus was inspired at an early age to lead the Roman armies in battle. He survived the battle of Cannae in 216 BC, and by 211 BC was elected to the proconsulship of Spain at only 25 years old. In 209 BC he proved his tactical genius by taking Carthago Nova. He drove the Carthaginians back into Africa, eventually defeating Hannibal at the battle of Zama in 202 BC. He was an able, honorable, and generous leader.

Julius Caesar
Julius Caesar is perhaps one of the most important, and most controversial figures in history. He was always ambitious and was not above adultery, manipulation, and bribery. But he was also known as a patron of the people, and he made numerous reforms on their behalf. His military skills were unmatched, and he is most famous for his campaign in Gaul which lasted nearly a decade.

Mark Antony
Mark Antony came from an important Roman family, and was a cousin to Julius Caesar. He was known as a brave if reckless individual. He distinguished himself as a general in Syria and Gaul. After Caesar's death, Antony and Octavian made peace by forming the second Triumvirate with Lepidus. He met Cleopatra while in Egypt and became her lover. This earned him many enemies and ultimately led to the lovers committing suicide.
