By the time of Alexander the Great, the people of India had already been conquered and invaded many times in the past. The ruler of Maghada kingdom, Chandragupta Maurya, beat back Alexander’s invasion and united the entire Northern half of the country, with territories expanding to the borders of modern Afghanistan. His grandson, Asoka Maurya, continued the effort, until he became sickened by war. Asoka became a Buddhist monk, and embarked on a peaceful campaign to foster religious freedom, learning, and prosperity for all. He sent Buddhist missionaries to Sri Lanka, and even to the West as far as Syria. Asoka’s descendants, however, could not hold the empire together, and eventually the Maurya dynasty collapsed from internal strife and foreign invasions.

Aggibrahma
Aggibrahma was married to Samghamitta, Asoka Maurya's daughter. Along with Asoka's brother, Tissa, Aggibrahma became a Buddhist monk and helped Asoka spread Buddhist philosophy throughout the surrounding regions. Legend states that Aggibrahma became an Arahat--a being very close to being enlightened--and developed six amazing supernatural powers.

Mahinda Maurya
As the son of Asoka, Mahinda became a monk and joined the effort to spread Buddhism. He was sent by Asoka to Ceylon (Sri Lanka) as a diplomatic envoy, and was largely responsible for that country's conversion to Buddhism.

Asoka Maurya The grandson of the Chandragupta Maurya, Asoka was one of the greatest rulers in Indian history. Though intrigued by the philosophy of the Buddha, Asoka only adopted it after the bloody battle of Kalinga in 261 BC. Appalled by the violence he had caused, Asoka embraced Buddhism and devoted his life to peace, religious tolerance, and the transmission of the Dharma. |
