BATTLEFIELD TACTICS (continued)

Using Basic Battle Strategies

Below are two examples of how to use some of the battle strategies covered on the previous page. In both instances, the defending army is using a wing formation. Roll the mouse over the images to watch the defense strategies unfold.

Defending Against Center Penetration

Here the attacker (red) brings a large force straight down the middle of the battlefield, attempting to use a center penetrating attack against the opponent's (blue) defense line. Watch as the defender deploys the wing formation, using an envelopment strategy to trap and surround the enemy.

Defending Against Oblique or Flanking Maneuver

This time the enemy is attacking the side of the formation, consistent with an oblique or perhaps a flanking strategy. Notice how the defender can use the same formation and strategy to defend against a new attack strategy. The key to this ability is the flexibility of the wing formation, and the resourcefulness of the defending commander.
