Persian civilization goes back beyond remembered history, through ancient Assyria and Babylon, up to the time when Alexander the Great conquered everything and the Seleucid dynasty was established. Just as in Egypt, the meeting of Persian and Macedonian culture created an explosion of trade and ideas, and of course conflict. The Seleucids frequently fought with Egypt, Rome, India, the cities of Asia Minor, and the Bactrian and Parthian nations who split off from Seleucid rule. It was the Parthians who brought the Seleucid’s final downfall. This lowly tribe of nomadic herdsman eventually conquered all of Persia and became a civilization to rival the Romans.

Antiochus II Theos
Antiochus II Theos became joint ruler of the Seleucid Empire with his father, Antiochus I. In 261 BC, Antiochus I died, leaving Antiochus II in charge. The following year, he began a war with Egypt in Syria. As part of a peace treaty with Egypt, he agreed to divorce his half-sister, Laodice, and marry Berenice, daughter of Ptolemy II. After his death, Antiochus divorced Berenice and invited Laodice back. She promptly poisoned him.

Anttiochus III Megas
Antiochus the Great was the son of Seleucus II. After the death of his brother, Seleucus III, he took over a failing dynasty. He attempted to restore the Seleucid Empire to its former glory by campaigning first to the east in Bactria and India, and then later to the west against Egypt and Asia Minor. With the Help of Philip V of Macedon, he was able to re-capture Syria, and made forays into Greece.

Pacorus I
Pacorus I, son of Orodes II was the king of Parthia at the time of the Second Roman Triumvirate of Antony, Octavian, and Lepidus. He aided his nephew Antigonus in deposing John Hyrcanus and taking the throne of Judea. Pacorus also assisted the Romans under Cassius at Philippi, and later allied with Quintus Labienus (40 BC), a former lieutenant of Cassius, in numerous campaigns against Antony in Syria.
