| Although the Greeks and Romans saw them as little more than barbarians, the Celts—the people of ancient Gaul—belonged to a diverse mixture of distinct cultures. At the time of the Roman expansion, Celtic tribes were driven westward into what are now Germany and France by nomadic Scythian and Hunnish tribes to the east. With each wave of new inhabitants, conflict raged for land and resources, but trade, religion, and new ideas flourished as well. Which path will you choose for the people of Gaul?

Commius
When Julius Caesar planned his invasion of Britain in 55 BCE he used Commius, an Atrebatic chief from Gaul, as a go-between with his British counterparts. Commius then switched sides, supporting Vercingetorix in his revolt against Rome, but when that rebellion failed, he fled to Britain, where he became king of the Atrebates based in Calleva.

Arminius
He obtained Roman citizenship, and served in the army where he gained insight into the art of war as practised by the Romans. Upon returning home in AD 7, he found his people oppressed by the Roman governor Varus. He organized a rebellion of the Cherusci, and annihilated 3 Roman legions in the Battle of Teutoburg Forest in AD 9, forcing the Romans back to the Rhine. He was celebrated as a hero for having freed Germany from Roman control.
