The Egyptian civilization was one of the oldest and proudest in ancient times, with a cultural and spiritual tradition that made it a world unto itself. When Egypt was conquered by Alexander the Great, the Ptolemaic line of Macedonian kings became a part of this rich history, and the meeting of the two civilizations changed both forever. The capital city of Alexandria became a hub of learning and trade, nestled between Persia to the East, and Macedonia, Greece, Rome, and Carthage to the West. The great library of Alexandria was unmatched anywhere in the world, and Egypt’s fertile lands eventually became the breadbasket of the Roman Empire.

Cleopatra (Cleopatra VII Thea Philopator)
Cleopatra ascended the Egyptian throne at the age of 17, when she was married to her younger brother, Ptolemy XII. During a power struggle between the two rulers, Caesar arrived in Egypt. He was charmed by Cleopatra and aided her in the ensuing civil war. After Caesar's assassination, Cleopatra returned to Egypt. Mark Antony arrived later, and also fell in love with Cleopatra. With his help, she sought to restore the power of her throne.

Ptolemy IV Philopator
After having his mother, brother, uncle, and wife killed, Ptolemy IV Philopator turned his attention to the wars raging in Syria. Antiochus III made an attempt to invade Palestine, but Ptolemy repelled him at Rafia in 217 BC. Seventy-thousand people lay dead at the end of the battle. He was uninterested in ruling, and his administration crumbled. Ptolemy was mostly pre-occupied with his primary interest: constructing massive warships.

Ptolemy V Epiphanes
When Ptolemy V Epiphanes took the throne, Egypt was in chaos. The nation was wracked by civil war and constant invasion attempts by Antiochus III of Persia, and Philip V of Macedon. After the loss of Palestine and the Egyptian territories in Asia Minor to Macedon, Antiochus III struck a decisive blow against Ptolemy at the battle of Panion in 200 BC. He married Antiochus' daughter, Cleopatra, to secure the peace.
