Established by Queen Dido, Carthage began as a way-point for Phoenician traders as they made their way through the Mediterranean. The city-state quickly grew to become one of the greatest trading ports in the ancient world, and the Carthaginian people were famous for their commercialism and love of luxury. As a nation of traders, Carthage employed mercenaries and slaves in war, which they were involved in relatively often. When Rome and Carthage became sucked into a minor war in Sicily, it began a bitter rivalry that would leave the two nations fighting for their very survival.

Hannibal Barca
In 221 BC, when his brother in law, Hasdrubal, was assassinated in Carthago Nova, Hannibal succeeded him as commander of Carthage's Spanish forces. For two years he mustered his strength, until finally he attacked and took Saguntum, then crossed the Ebro river on a bloody campaign against Rome. Hannibal defeated the Romans in battle after battle, and kept them running scared with his superior tactics and brutality.

Hamilcar
As a skilled general and statesman, in 247 BC, Hamilcar Barca was given command of the Carthaginian forces in Sicily, during the first Punic war. Despite his formidable military skills, Carthage was defeated, and Hamilcar had to negotiate peace with the Romans. In 238 BC, the Carthaginian mercenaries revolted, having gone unpaid after their defeat in Sicily. Hamilcar defeated them, winning enormous popularity and political influence in the process.

Masinissa
Masinissa, the son of Gaia, was the prince of the nomadic Massyli tribe of Numida. He grew up in Carthage, as a hostage against aggression by his father. Masinissa took this opportunity to become educated in Punic and Greek languages and culture. Leading his famous Numidian light cavalry, he fought with Hannibal's brothers in Spain against the Romans, and was instrumental in the defeat of Publius and Gnaeus Scipio.
