In The Chronicles of the Three Kingdoms, an army consisted of divisions. Each division consisted of four battalions: HQ battalion, first battalion, second battalion and support battalion. In most cases, a support battalion consisted of a unit type suitable for supporting the first three battalions. For example, an Archer division consisted of three archer battalions and one spearman battalion. Spearman battalion would try to protect the division from a melee attack.
